About Us

Action Against Hunger was created in France in 1979 as Action Contre la Faim to fight against hunger and malnutrition globally. Our mission is to save lives and we are committed to ending world hunger through prevention, detection, and treatment of malnutrition in children, which includes emergency situations caused by conflicts and natural disasters.

Today, Action Against Hunger is a major player in the fight against hunger in the world. Structured on an international network, our organization provides a coordinated response in nearly 50 countries. Recognizing the various underlying factors that can cause malnutrition, we our integrated approach cover various thematic areas including Nutrition and Health, Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Food Security & Livelihoods (FSL) and Emergency Response.

Our work globally has impacted the lives of 15 million individuals, through a network of 7100 humanitarian professionals across 50 countries. In India our operations from the grassroots upwards, are focused on taking decisive action against the causes and effects of malnutrition. Action Against Hunger currently works in partnership with State Governments on preventing and treating malnutrition though the “First 1000 days of life” approach.

Action Against Hunger India is legally registered as Fight Hunger Foundation – an Indian NGO. A non-political and non-religious organization, we are one of the few NGOs in India focusing specifically on child malnutrition. The board is composed of representatives from diverse sectors including business, health, academia and diplomacy, with Professor MS Swaminathan as Chairman Emeritus of the Foundation.

The organization aims to achieve its mission to end hunger in a systematic and sustainable way, we have developed strong partnerships with various institutions including Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Department of Women and Child Development, Integrated Child Development Services, hospitals and public health institutions, besides other national and international organizations that support our cause. Day in, day out, our teams work tirelessly with some of India’s most vulnerable communities: detecting and treating malnutrition in children, and training families on how to prevent it – saving lives and enabling thousands of India’s children to beat hunger and look forward to a brighter future, where they can be part of the country’s development. Our malnutrition programs cover 1265 villages across the States of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Gujarat with a multidisciplinary approach to tackle malnutrition among children.

Our work spans three broad categories –
  • Treatment : Providing home-based treatment to children suffering from moderate acute malnutrition and referring children with severe acute malnutrition to the nearest Nutrition Rehabilitation Centres (NRC).
  • Prevention : Counsel and educate mothers / parents and the community at large on the causes and symptoms of malnutrition, maternal and child nutrition, sanitation, pregnancy care, accessing health services etc.
  • Sustainability: Sustainability: Training Anganwadi and Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) workers on identifying the early signs of malnutrition and taking corrective actions.
